Portland (1)

Das Pfingstwochenende ist hier das „Memorial Day“ Wochenende – und man hat den Montag auch frei – also haben Kelly und ich uns aufgemacht, Neues zu entdecken. Portland kam uns gerade recht, das liegt im Norden, im Staat Oregon, und ist wunderschön und grün, ein bisschen ähnlich (angeblich) wie Seattle und Vancouver. Die ersten 2 Tage haben wir damit verbracht, die Stadt zu erkunden, und es hat uns echt gut gefallen – mir hat besonders der Rosengarten (Regina, ich hätte sie am liebsten alle aufgegessen) und der japanische Garten gefallen – wie gesagt, alles ist grün, überall ist Wasser, die Strassen sind gut erhalten und sauber – alles in allem ein bisschen wie zuhause:-) Die Fotos von unserer (geführten) Tour ins Grüne, also die nähere Umgebung, folgen beim nächsten Mal… Und der Zoo war auch toll, sehr grosse Gehege und alles in einem riesigen Park gelegen… Portland, die unamerikanische Oase mitten in Amerika :-) For the Memorial Day weekend Kelly and I decided it is about time to explore new places, and so we went to Portland, Oregon. The city is beautifully located in a gorgeous landscape, a little like Vancouver and Seattle (as I have heard). The first 2 days we spent exploring the city, and I liked especially the rose garden (hm, the smell!!!) and the japonese garden, which is just amazing with all the symbols, etc… The whole city is very green, the highways are in fantastic shape, there is water everywhere (river, fountains, etc.), the streets are very clean, almost reminded me a little of home :-) The zoo was very pretty too, the cage were quite big and spacious, and located in a beautiful park… All in all a very un-american oasis in the middle of America ;-) Pics of the tour to the countryside will follow soon…

Nach dem langen TiEcon WE haben wir 2 Tage frei bekommen, um das WE nachzuholen - yippieeeee!!! Kelly hatte zudem am Montag auch noch Geburtstag, und sie hat sich gewünscht, mit offenem Verdeck nach Carmel by the Sea zu fahren. Es war ein herrlich sonniger Tag (natürlich gefolgt von einem moderaten Sonnenbrand :-) ) und wir hatten viel Zeit, das Wochenende in Gedanken nochmal zu erleben und am Strand ein Nickerchen zu halten ;-) Was will man mehr? Willkommen in den späten Zwanzigern, Kelly!!!! ;-) After the long TiEcon weekend we got 2 days off work, and as it was Kelly's birthday on Monday, we did as the child of the day whished: took the top down off the car and went to Carmel by the Sea! It was a beautiful and sunny day, and we had all the time in the world to chat about the conference and else and enjoy a nap on the beach - what else could you possibily whish for? Welcome to your late twenties, Kelly!!! :-)

TiEcon 2007 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nach langen Vorbereitungen war es endlich da: das TiEcon Wochenende!!!! Die Konferenz ist super gelaufen, keine großen Katastrophen, aber viele nette Menschen und viel Arbeit, aber es hat sich voll und ganz gelohnt!!!! Es hat mir unglaublich viel Spass gemacht! Wir haben im selben Hotel (Konferenzzentrum Hyatt) übernachtet, und das war sehr praktisch, denn man konnte morgens um 6 aus dem Bett fallen, und 15 min. später unten zur Stelle sein... unsere Arbeitstage waren dann auch 12-13 std. lang, aber noch nicht abend um 7 zu ende, denn da wurde dann noch abendgegessen, und gefeiert, mit Sponsoren, Mitarbeitern, und Austellern. Ja, jeden Abend :-) Also das hieß: nach 12 std. Stehen noch mal ne Runde Tanzen :-) Und zum Abschluss die Party - ich wurde zur Inderin gemacht! Die TiEcon Tradition will es so, dass sich ALLE indisch anziehen :-) Und ich habe mich in meinem Glitzersari wirklich toll gefühlt, aslo werde ich mir einen aus Indien bestellen, wenn meine liebe Kollegin Nidhi (im blau-rose farbenen Sari) hinfährt, demnächst! Man kommt sich darin vor wie eine Prinzessin, und das war ja schon immer mein Kindheitstraum ;-) Alles in allem - so ein Event könnte ich ruhig einmal im Monat machen, die Kombination von Arbeit, Herausforderung, Stress uns Spass war genau richtig, und ich habe mich wohl und am richtigen Platz gefühlt! Jetzt bin ich gespannt, was danach kommt, welche Aufgaben mich erwarten, nun da die wichtigste, für die ich eingestellt wurde, hinter uns liegt... Und am Sonntag gab es dann noch eine Lunchparty im Haus unseres Vorstandes... herrlich entspannend und genau das Richtige, um abzuschalten und das ganze Geschehen nochmal Revue passieren zu lassen... After all the preparations, finally the TiEcon weekend happened!!! The conference just went great and we had no huge catastrophes , but many nice people and a lot of work, but it was much fun and definitely worth it! The staff had the possibility to stay in the Hyatt hotel attached to the conference center, so it was very practical to get up at 6.15 am and be at work downstairs 15 min. later :-) But after 12 hours of working there was still enough energy left for nice dinners and partying with the co-workers, attendees and friends. That means: after standing around most of the days, we indeed found the energy to dance at nights! (Good training for the legs, I tell you :-) ) And Saturday night we had a banquet, and I was turned into an Indian - yes, for the first time in my life a wore a saree!!! The TiEcon tradition is for all the women to wear the traditional clothing, no matter what culture they come from - and I felt like a princess in it!!! My childhood dream came true - being a princess for one night :-) I could do with such an event every month, I enjoyed it very much, the hustle of the preparations, the excitement of eventually meeting people I only knew from the phone and also the fun it all made! Now I am looking forward to find new challenges, and see what else I can do here in this job for this organization... And the grand finale was the lunch party at our president's house - very relaxing and the right occasion to slow down and talk it all over with the co-workers, enjoying good laughs...

Chilled weekend with Mrs. Westwood

In Erwartung des nächsten Wochenendes und der Konferenz, wegen der ich eigentlich eingestellt wurde, habe ich es an diesem WE ruhig angehen lassen. Samstag war ein schöner, aber kühler Tag, also bin ich nach San Francisco reingefahren, und habe mir die "Vivienne Westwood" Ausstellung im De Young Museum (http://www.thinker.org/deyoung/exhibitions/exhibition.asp?exhibitionkey=657) angesehen, die ich in Deutschland verpasst hatte. Und ich fand sie super!!! Kreativität verbunden mit Ästhetik ist immer wieder begeisternd (und Geschmackssache, nehme ich mal an)! Und vor allem faszinierend, was alles dahintersteckt, kulturell gesehen... Naja, und nach einem Spaziergang im GoldenGate Park und dem angrenzenden Ocean Beach, hat es mich dann in die Stadt gezogen, wo ich mit Vanessa und Dan und einem befreundeten Pärchen Abendessen beim Thailänder hatte... yummie! Wenn nur nicht immer die Rückfahrt so lang wäre... (45 Min.) und man darf ja nix trinken, weil man ja fährt. Und so sah dann mein Sonntag aus : Pool und lecker kochen :-) In expectation of the next weekend and the conference I was actually hired for, I spent a very chilled weekend. Saturday was beautiful weather but kind of cold, so I went up to San Francisco and enjoyed the "Vivienne Westwood" exhibition at the De Young museum in Golden Gate Park (see link above). She is just awsome, incredible, how creative she has been over 36 years and still is! It was really worth seeing it, and I am glad that I went, as I had missed it out when it has been in Germany. After a nice walk through Golden Gate Park down to Ocean Beach I went downtown to have a nice dinner with Vanessa and Dan and some of their friends at a Thai restaurant - loved it! Unfortunately the way back home is always so long (45 min.) and you cannot drink as you have to drive... And finally, this was my Sunday: pool and cooking yummie prawns... ;-)

Volunteer appreciation evening

Am Freitagabend passierte endlich mal wieder was blogwürdiges: TiE (www.tiesv.org) hat eine Party für die freiwilligen Helfer geschmissen, die alle an der Konferenz mithelfen (www.tiecon.org). Meine erste indische Party! Und ich sage euch: indischer Techno (eine Mischung aus Bollywoodsounds und hartem Beat) ist sehr tanzbar, aber auch auf Dauer echt anstrengend :-) Aber jung und alt haben mitgetanzt, die Stimmung war super und ich habe einfach nur versucht mitzuhalten :-) Sogar unser Boss Seshan war ganz vorne mit dabei im Hüften schwingen (letztes Foto)! Ich freue mich schon auf die Konferenz und die anschließende Party - ich hab gehört, es ist das Happening des Jahres in unserer Firma, und alle werden in Saris indisch eingekleidet... ;-)

Friday evening we had a Volunteer appreciation evening, all volunteers helping out in TiEcon (see link above) were invited to dinner and party. And it was my first indian Party! The music has been a mix of techno and bollywood sounds, very danceable but also very exhausting after a while - and man, they did party! Even our boss Seshan (see last pic) moved his hips incredibly well, and I must say I am laready looking forward to TiEcon's banquet, the happening of the year, and we all will be dressed in indian saris... :-)
